Can I add a second or third holder to my existing individual account to make it a joint account?

No. The holding pattern of your account is fixed at the time of account opening and cannot be changed later, so you cannot add a second or third holder to an existing individual account to turn it into a joint account. If you want a joint holding, you would need to open a new account with the joint holders included from the start.

Why can't holders be added to an existing account?

When you open an account, it is created with a specific holding pattern — either single (individual) or joint. This pattern is part of the account's KYC and registration with the depository and exchanges, and it is not something that can be edited afterwards. Adding or removing a holder would change the identity of the account itself, which is why a fresh account is required instead.

What about a joint account — how many holders can it have?

A Demat account can be opened jointly, with up to three holders — a first (main) holder and up to two joint holders. The first holder is the primary account owner, and all holders must complete KYC.

A trading account, however, can only be held by a single individual. This is why a joint account structure applies to the demat side of holdings, while trades are always placed through a single-holder trading account.

Is a joint holder the same as a nominee?

No — these are different things:

  • A joint holder is a co-owner of the account from the day it is opened.
  • A nominee is the person who receives the assets in the account in the event of the account holder's death. Adding a nominee does not make them a co-owner, and you can add or update a nominee on your existing account without opening a new one — do it yourself from the Profile section on Dock. See How do I add a nominee? for the steps.

If your goal was to make sure someone can access your holdings later, a nomination may be what you need rather than a joint account.

Important: To move to a joint holding, a new account must be opened with the desired holders; existing holdings would then need to be handled separately. Please reach out to Rupeezy support before starting so we can guide you on the correct process for your situation.
